The GMES & Africa Support Programme is a joint initiative co-financed by the European Commission and the African Union Commission. It aims to adapt and utilize Copernicus Programme data and services to address Africa’s specific needs in water management, natural resources, marine and coastal areas, environmental monitoring, and civil security.
The programme supports the implementation of the African Space Policy and Strategy, leveraging space science and technology for economic growth and sustainable development. Managed by the African Union Commission as the delegated authority, it enhances the capacity of policymakers, scientists, businesses, and citizens to design, implement, and monitor policies using Earth Observation data.
GMES & Africa introduces five key innovations:
-Inclusion of North African countries,
-Full management by the African Union Commission.
-Engagement of the African private sector,
-Involvement of African academia,
-Use of Copernicus Sentinel data.
While overseen by the African Union Commission, implementation is carried out by regional and national consortia across Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Africa, as well as the Western Indian Ocean region (Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles).
